Your Favorite Business Books that Help to Overcome the 7 Home Based Business Mistakes

Please share your favorite home based business booksI’m beginning a series this week about the 7 deadly mistakes that will kill your home based business.

These are all mistakes that I have made at some point in my journey as a home based business owner, and are the reason why I ended up trying so many different things from candle making, to bridal consulting, to real estate, ebay, and even cooking in front of others in my one woman crusade to find the holy grail of home based businesses.  (You’ll have to read my Thanksgiving network marketing prospecting lessons post to get why cooking in front of others was such a mistake for me!)

I’d venture to guess that if you’ve been building a home based business for a while you’ve come up against one or many, if not all of these deadly mistakes as well.  But the great news is that although they may kill your business if you make them, as the saying goes, if they don’t kill you they will only make you stronger.

The 7 Deadly Home Based Business Mistakes are:

  1. Not choosing the right business model
  2. Not having the right business mindset.
  3. Not creating momentum with enough of the right, consistent action.
  4. Not having a mentor to give you support and accountability toward your goals.
  5. Not putting your money into the right places and not monetizing your business building activities.
  6. Not having the mechanics in place to help your home based business grow.
  7. Not marketing consistently or effectively.

I will be going into more depth on each of them this week and sharing ways to help you find your sweet spot and to help you to avoid making these 7 deadly mistakes that can kill your home based business, but first I’d like to talk about mistakes…

Success in any Home Based Business boils down to two things: making mistakes and finding resourceful solutions.

We can’t move forward without making mistakes.  They are an inevitable result in the process of growth. Aside from parenting, I can’t think of anything like starting a business to be a better catalyst for personal growth.

But in our quest to not make mistakes, we can often get hung up buying all the best tools and trainings for our businesses.  Buying 10 different domain names in the quest for the perfect one, changing our target market over and over again.  Thousands of home based business owners believe that they have to have this shiny new Facebook advertising training if they are ever going to be successful, or if they don’t get this new training program on blog SEO, they will never be found in the search engines.

I’ve done it too…heck, I still get caught up into the excitement of the business launches, but what I’ve come to realize with my latest training purchase, is that I’ve got a pretty good foundation already, just based on my being resourceful.

I think many of the biggest mistakes we can make in any home based business can be warded off with a library card and a mentor.   And I really believe that the mental part of building a home based business is as much or even more important than the other parts of building a business.

So for this post, I’d like to ask you to share your favorite mindset, marketing, time management, or home based business book that you’ve read that has helped you overcome one of the  7 deadly mistakes.

I’ll go first…

One of my favorite home based business entrepreneur books is The One Minute Millionaire: The Enlightened Way to Wealth, by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G Allen.  I love so many things about this book.

It’s a story as well as a business blueprint that dives into the mindset and mechanics of becoming a millionaire.  It’s written in an interesting way where one side of the page is a story about a woman who has to make a million dollars in 90 days or she will lose custody of her kids forever, and the other side of the page is a one minute lesson on mindset, money, mentors, etc.   It is packed with so many great lessons hidden inside the bright yellow and purple book jacket that I wouldn’t even know where to begin to share them with you, but the one that sticks out for me the biggest is having a mentor and building a team. It’s definitely one of my top picks for any home based business owner.

Please share your favorite books for a home based business entrepreneur in the comments below, and please tweet and share this on facebook so we can get more people adding to the list!  I will be compiling all of our favorite home based business books into a resource page and you will receive a link back to your blog as a thank you for contributing!

  1. Hey Heather,

Awesome post as usual! So true – the mistakes that you are sharing will definitely KILL your business in its infancy 🙁

I look forward to your series as you’ll be helping people to avoid them like a plague if they want to build a successful home business.

My favourite book of all time is The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Many people get into this industry thinking that they will become successful overnight. Then they start struggling along the way, not seeing the results they were looking for when they got started.

This book teaches how to create success in all aspects of your life – health, finances, personal relationships and so on. The key is to take consistent actions towards your goals every single day.

The purpose of the book is to help you become aware of the Slight Edge – how it is working in your life, every day, every hour, every moment in every step you take and every choice you make — very powerful lessons!

Look forward to your list of favourite books! 🙂

Keep up the good work, Heather!

  2. Hey Heather,

It has been said that anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.

The thing is not whether we will make mistake when starting but if we’ll learn and be stronger by virtue of them.

My favourite book for a home based business entrepreneur has to be Dan Kennedy’s ‘The Ultimate Success Secret’ which talked a great deal about personal responsibility.

    Thanks, Heather for the opportunity.

…fear is the passion of slaves!

  3. Hey Heather I absolutely LOVE your blog! I need to learn some tips from you! I am now doing one video per day for the next 6 weeks and then I am going into 1 blog per day for the following 6.
Thank you for all your input to the home business/internet marketing arena.
    To your success,

  4. Hmmm, I think that my favorite book for home based business owners entrepreneurs would have to be Crush It by Gary Vanerchuk. That book is compact and full of nuggets on exactly what you need to do to build a successful and profitable business. I absolutely love it and keep referring to it. Can’t wait to see what books other people list.

  5. Hi Heather,

thanks for starting this initiative. It’s a sign of maturity if we are able to learn from other people’s mistakes. That’s what books are designed to help us with, aren’t they ?

When it comes to avoid typical MLM mistakes and to do the right things for my business, “Success in 10 steps” by Michael Dlouhy is my personal all-time favourite.

    Take care

  6. Heather, Yes, mistakes are OK, as long as you don’t let them stifle you. I can’t tell you how many mistakes I’ve made but I never look at them as anything other than a way to learn and be a better business owner.

I’ve read several books on being an entrepreneur and home business but one of the most inspiring was actually a free book written by Wallace Wattles called “The Science of Getting Rich” written back in 1910. I think that was my very first inspiration 🙂

  7. Heather,

    Great tips as always!

Personal favorite is “How To Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. No matter how old this book is, we can still use his techniques EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!

How do you think I am able to remember people’s names, good old Mr. Carnegie’s tip.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Tommy D.

  8. Hi Heather,

For developing an uncrushable mindset, I can’t go past Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”…

Being able to study this book in a Mastermind environment makes in 100x more powerful.

The more times I’ve read this book, the deeper the rabbit hole goes. It speaks to you at every level.

It’s fair to say, compared to just one year ago, after reading through the book several times, I may as well have had a brain transplant.

In business, there’s nothing more powerful or important that developing a winning mindset.

Great post Heather, thanks for the inspiration,

  9. Hi Heather,

What a great post! I know I’ve sure made my fair share of mistakes, and learned a lot from each of them! 😉

There are so many books, and some have already been mentioned… so I will have to go with “The Slight Edge”. Although I think the little book “Who Moved My Cheese” is also a must read for everyone!

  10. Hi Heather,

What a good idea for a post.

I agree with all the books listed so far and there are so many I could have chosen but what seems to come to mind is Robert Kiyoaski’s “The Business School for People who Like Helping People”.

In it Kiyosaki talks about the eight hidden values of a network marketing business, other than making money.
