Guest posting can give you a big boost of targeted traffic, and it’s top on my clever marketing strategy list right now!  It should be on yours if it’s not already.

With my daily posting schedule, so many great members in the clever marketer mastermind community and blog marketing forum, and my desire to guest post in new places myself, I’ve decided to open up clever marketer to guests.

I’m looking for some very high quality writers to share their brilliance with my readers, offering new clever marketing ideas centered around the topics of internet marketing, network marketing online, social media marketing, video marketing, SEO, and blogging.

I’d love for you to visit my guest post page for more details about writing for clever marketer, but fist I thought I’d share with you some things to focus on in your guest posting strategy:

Guest Post Etiquette: 10 Tips for Your Guest Blogging Success:

1. Pick the right blog for your guest post: You don’t want to write for just any old blog.  You want your blog to be in your niche or a complimentary niche so the traffic and back links you will be building is targeted.

2. Look for blogs that have good traffic and that have an active community of readers (Check for evidence in the comments and social media shares).

3. Be a reader and subscriber of the blogs you want to guest post for so you can get a feel for their style, what topics will fit with their readers, etc.

4. Get to know the blog owner. Don’t just submit a post out of the blue, your chances of getting approved are not high that way.  Instead, spend a couple of weeks getting to know the blog owner through social media and by commenting on their blog regularly.  They will be much more likely to give you a chance if they know who you are.

5. Contact the blog owner and let them know you’d like to write a guest post for them. You may submit a post you’ve written with your request or the blog owner may offer some suggestions on content that they would like to see.

6. Write an amazing post full of value with links to related posts on the blog owner’s site and submit it expecting feedback.  Feedback from the blog owner is a gift to you because it will give you a different perspective on your writing which will help you become a better writer.  Remember that it’s the blog owner’s goal to provide the best content possible for their readers, and if your message isn’t a perfect match, don’t take it personally, but do tweak it where suggested.

7. Don’t be a link leech! Remember that as a guest you will need to be respectful.  It’s customary for the blog owner to allow you an anchor text link in the body of your post to your blog content as well as a link or two in your bio.

8. Plan ahead for the traffic: I suggest you even write a sister post on your blog linking to your guest post, thanking the visitors from your guest post for visiting your site and sharing a couple of additional golden nuggets that are related to the guest post you wrote.  Publish this the same time your guest post will be published.

9. Promote your guest post to your list, social media, and bookmarking sites. A blog owner who sees a surge in traffic after your guest post is likely going to want you to come back and guest post again! 🙂

10. Answer all the comments that are left on your guest post, thoughtfully and thoroughly. Treat the blog owner’s regular readers well and they’ll treat you well!

  2. Hey Heather,

I see things are really happening here! Well done my friend!

I have been getting a few guest post requests and I need to set this up as well.

Great tips you’re sharing here. I need to implement #8 as you suggest here. Drive the traffic from my guest post to a related post on my blog.

I’m currently doing it the other way around – I promote my guest post on my blog and send my readers to the blog where my post is published… I can still use both strategies, can’t I?

Thanks for your leadership, Heather. Keep ROCKING!

    All the best,

    • Hi Mavis,

I have been wanting to start accepting guest posts for a while, but I just hadn’t gotten around to it.

You do a nice job promoting your guest posts on your blog. I like what you do. I think that linking them to each other creates a nice circle of traffic and gives your guests a nice welcome greeting.

Thank you for your leadership as well, Mavis.

  3. I love your 10 guest post tips. Better be effective 🙂 thanks a lot for sharing

  4. Hey Heather, great opportunity! I’ll make sure to submit some clever post!

Also, I do have a cool guest blogging tip to add. Have you ever tried MyBlogGuest? It’s a community of guest bloggers with lots of activity. I’ve had some great articles from there!

You are sure to meet a lot clever marketers there! If I were you, I’d also offer Ann (owner of MyBlogGuest) some kind of partnership. Your communities have a lot to benefit from each other!

    • Thanks Jessy for the tip!

I will certainly look into it My Blog Guest. Brilliant tip! THANKS!

Looking forward to a guest post from you!

  5. Heather, aloha. Thx so much for the step-by-step guide and the invitation. Following your outline, I am going to create a guest post for Clever Marketer. If you accept and publish it, it will be my first guest post.

Knowing exactly what the blog owner wants make it so much easier rather than guessing what they might want. Also, if you are a relative newbie and definitely a non-techie like me, it is oh-so-helpful to be told what needs to be done, Knowing the “why” behind each suggestions makes it much easier to understand and thus implement.

My homework is cut out for me this weekend. Enjoy a wonderful weekend of birthday celebration. Aloha. Janet

  6. Guest posting is a great way to show you excellence on that traffic, great way to build links, great way to make relationship with other bloggers and perfect way to steal some readers from that blog.

P.S sorry, forget to wish you on your B’Day
Happy B’Day, hope you have a great day. Enjoyy a lot

  7. Hi Heather!

Those are great tips for a blogger wanting to do guest posts. One that I hadn’t thought about before is hanging out yourself at the blog to get a feel for what the posts are like and to get to know the blog owner.

I would like to do some guest posting, myself, and will be keeping all of your advice in mind.

  8. Awesome! I hope we’ll keep in touch there as well (if you join!)

  9. Hi Heather,

Thanks for all the inspiration in this post and with the wonderful projects you’ve initiated to create engagement and community among bloggers – you’re awesome, and when I feel ready I’m sure I’ll be sending one or two guest posts in your direction…

Chilly cheers from a (mostly) sunny Saturday Sweden!

  10. Hey Heather!

Excellent set of tips for effective guest posting.

Link leeching is bad, even if your guest post gets accepted; you lose your reputation. I would suggest not to add any links (even the relevant ones on your first guest post to that blog. If you do a second guest post on that blog, you can include a link from your blog that is relevant to the post.

  11. Hi Heather,

Those are all great tips for guest posting! After the Prove It challenge is over I really want to start guest posting so I am going go over your list several times so that I can do it right!

I would love to guest post here so I will definitely look at your guest post page!

  12. Hi Heather,

Great points! Familiarizing ourselves with the site we’re going to submit to is key. By looking back at the last 10 or so posts of the target site you’ll have an idea what type of content works there at the present time.

A sister post or landing page that is built specifically for the traffic source is a savvy idea. In the few guest posts I’ve written since launching my current site I know I haven’t done this correctly. But it’s important because you want to make your first impression highly relevant to the traffic you’ll receive.

Hey it was nice to see Eric (from our BMF group) guest posting on Traffic Generation Cafe recently!

  13. Hi Heather, once I complete the ProveIt2011 challenge and get my book submitted, get my rather long ebook done and posted and a couple of partners/clients sorted….I will submit a request.

I think I have you figured out by now 🙂 so I should be able to speak your language! (fingers crossed) Thanks for the offer.

  14. Hey Heather… I find that #4 is really key for success. I’ve actually been offered guest blogging gigs because I’ve been a frequent commenter. So it definitely pays to be regular fixture before you start pitching your ideas.

  15. Hey Heather,

When I started out with my other blogs. This is what I did to get fast ranking and traffic. It works! People jump on it!!!

    Have a great day…

  16. Hi Heather,

Excellent tips for guest blogging. Thank you.

I started doing some of these ages ago and then for some reason got distracted and stopped but this is about the sixth post I have read in days about guest blogging so I am guessing there’s a message in all of this for me.

It would certainly be a privilege to contribute here Heather so will join the queue really soon. 🙂

  17. Hi Heather,

Thanks for sharing these great tips on how to be a guest host. I’m definitely going to take some notes from this.

    Have a wonderful evening. 🙂

  18. This is the basic condition for guest post to have your introduction with the blogger as there are many writers in the world that can write excellently but without introduction their articles are not often published.

  19. Hi heather,

This is the first time I have visited your blog and I like it for creating a community of bloggers. Your step-by-step guest post tips are worth noting for every guest blogger and guest host

    • Hi Kavita!

Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you visited and introduced yourself here! Looking forward to getting to know you more! 🙂

  20. Other thing which keep in mind to all guest blogger that one extra task that can lift the guest post to another level is to monitor the comments being left on the post and interacting with those who read it.
