Maybe you’re impatient like I am and you want to see faster results, or maybe you’ve taken some time off for a vacation or some other reason and the traffic to your blog has dropped down a little bit, whatever the reason, the answers and the resources are here.

Several of these mistakes are linked to a related post containing information that helped me to learn and improve my blog SEO and increase my blog traffic.  I suggest after you read this post, comment on it, and share it, that you come back and explore the links I’m sharing here.

Shall we get started?

Traffic and Blog SEO: 10 Common Beginner Mistakes

1. Thinking that “if you build it, they will come”

  • Instead you need to drive the traffic to your blog through social media, articles, videos, guest posting, tribes, newsletters, emails, blog memes, etc.

2. Posting inconsistently and infrequently

  • Top bloggers “do it” every day or multiple times a day!  Posting frequently practically guarantees success.

3. Not writing valuable blog posts that are worth book marking and syndicating

  • Share your best information on your blog!  You will obviously want to optimize it for blog SEO but make sure you mostly focus on the HEO, Human Emotion Optimization that will keep your readers on the page!

4. Not doing keyword research

  • Ahh…I know, keyword research can be as boring as preparing your walls before you paint because you want to hurry up to the fun part of writing, but you’ve got to do it if you want to get good results!

5. Ignoring on page blog SEO rules when you’re writing

6. Not re-purposing your best blog content

  • Turn your best post  into an article and submit it to article directories (I love the ezine articles plugin for automatic article submission!)
  • You can also create press releases, videos, and podcasts by tweaking the same content and distributing it online with links leading back to your blog, tags, titles, and descriptions all including the keywords you wrote the original article around for your on page blog SEO.

7. Not doing deep internal linking

  • Link to your older relevant posts in your current post with anchor text in the main keyword of the post you are linking to, to keep them fresh and getting traffic.  (See the examples I’ve done in this post.)

8. Not letting the search engines know about your blog updates

  • Make sure that your blog is set so that it’s visible to search engines?  It’s under settings, privacy in your wordpress dashboard.
  • Blog SEO WordPress Privacy SettingsPing your blog on, and

9. Not connecting and building relationships with other blog owners in your niche or being part of a tribe

10. Not building quality back-links from high ranking sites

  • Commenting on relevant top blogs in your niche
  • Submitting content to high page rank sites like ezine articles that links back to your blog
  • Get quality backlinks by commenting on .edu and .gov sites (quality will help your blog seo more than quantity will!)

Seven Other Bonus Traffic and Blog SEO tips:

1. Do  a virtual interview with another blog owner.  Write a post about it, paying attention to your on page blog seo and embed the video or audio in the post.  Chances are the other blog owner will likely promote your post to their list and drive traffic to you.

2. Give away a free checklist or report that doesn’t require an opt in.  Your post will likely go viral.  Make sure to include a link to your blog in the pdf checklist.

3. Submit your site to web directories that have a high page rank.

4. Ping your Feedburner rss feed on the ping sites I listed above.

5. Write a controversial post related to your niche, like I did on my recent Personal Branding: It’s Not About You Inc. post.

6. Guest post on other blogs and invite other blog writers to guest post for you.  (Make sure you tweak their post to be be optimized for the search engines and so that it includes some internal deep links too.)

7. Go back and update some of your older posts so that they are better optimized for on page blog SEO and linked to other related posts/pages.

I’ve made these traffic and blog SEO mistakes over and over and still continued to grow my blog.  But as I work to correct them on my blog, I’m seeing fantastic improvements.  I am by no means an expert, but in my opinion that’s great because if I can correct my blog SEO mistakes then you can too!

Again, I’ve included several links to other articles in this post that will help you increase your traffic and improve your blog SEO. You’ll want to come back and check them out, but first…

  1. Hey Heather,

That’s two really comprehensive lists! There’s a couple of elements in there I’ve not really integrated into my routine yet so glad for the reminder.

Especially love the analogy of keyword research to preparing walls to paint. I’ve just been painting the old weatherboards outside my house – it seems to take forever and doesn’t produce any visible finished results. But the preparation, same as keywords, is essential!

They’re not called ‘key’ words for nothing!

Thanks again Heather for your easy to read and useful info!

    Merry Christmas!

  2. Hi Heather,

I have to admit, you have some awesome advice here. I really like you suggestion about the guest blogging… I have been thinking about that quite a bit lately, because my weak area of expertise is social networking with Facebook and Twitter etc.

Even though I have been doing SEO for many years, I have only been blogging for 6 months now, and have had my website WebSEOBlogTips on-line exactly 3 months to today (the 22nd of Sept.), so I still have a lot to learn.

I am going to be visiting your blog for your expert advice more often, and maybe implement some of your suggestions into Search Engine Optimization articles for my readers… of course giving proper credit plus a link… it’s only good business.

I have said enough, so thanks for some great information.

One of the other big tips is to use awesome image and related to a post.

Just wondered what are the best sources for images?

    Thank You!

    Merry Christmas!

  4. Most newbie bloggers far to often think that as soon as they build a blog and start posting that the traffic and the money will come. In a dream world that might happen, just not in the blogging industry.

  5. Hi Heather! Great tips and info – checklists are so nice to have. Can you or someone enlighten me on how to do #3 of in your ‘Seven Bounus…’?

  7. Hey Heather,

Awesome Blog SEO tips you are sharing here. This is a learning process, the key is to implement what you learn in order to see the desired results.

We all start from somewhere. Just like you, I made some of the mistakes, but everything changed when I started following top bloggers and implementing what I was learning. My goal is to take my blog to a whole new level 🙂

Thanks for sharing your insights. Fantastic post!

    Enjoy your holidays my friend!

  8. Hi Heather,

    awesome tips, thanks for sharing.

One of the most frequent mistakes I see people make is blogging inconsistently. The other is not getting any comments which is due to lack of networking efforts with other bloggers. It seems that people aren’t aware of the negative social proof they’re creating by that.

A blog is a beast sometimes: Once you start it, you have to follow through no matter what.

If people ask me if they should start a blog, this is the question I ask them:”Are you able to follow through and keep it running and do the social activities as well that are necessary as well ?”

The good thing about your tips is that it’s never too late to apply them. I am going through my existing blog posts at the moment with regard to SEO and internal deep linking, creating videos to point to them etc.

Thanks again for sharing and merry Christmas.

    Take care

  10. Hi Heather,

I’ve made those mistakes on my own blog at one time or another. It’s a learning process and this list should help people get on the fast track for blogging.

  11. Hi Heather,

What a lot of excellent advice you have shared here.

Blogging is really like building house… you start with something modest and then as you learn more so come the add ons and improvements. As long as one keeps at the building process and is a dedicated foreman the result is a creation that grows from strength to strength.

Thanks for providing such wonderful value. 🙂

  12. Hey Heather, I think #3 was the hardest for me in the beginning, and still is from time to time. Connecting with people’s emotions and what it is they really want to know can be harder than it seems.

…and #5? Very informative 😉 Nice Job Heather!

  13. Heather,

This is a great post, thank you! I can easily use this list to set blogging goals for the new year! The one thing that I have not put much effort into is the keyword research.

    Have a great new year!

  14. Heather,

    This is sound advice.

I can atest to all of these points.

Personally I have lost a ton of traffic because of
not following some of you tips.

I am currently working on building a network for distributors in my opportunity can utilize when holding certain events. This has caused me not to post as frequently and I have not done as much keyword research.

Luckily, when I do post, it does bring in good traffic.

Thanks for putting this together, you hit a home run with it. 🙂

    Happy New Year!

    • Heather Stephens says:

      Hi Tommy,

It’s a fine balance between building our own businesses and supporting our teammates. It reminds me of the tides, where sometimes my time is spent with the team and other times the majority of my time can be spent on my direct business.

The good thing about traffic is that it doesn’t disappear forever. It’s pretty simple to get it back again with a little consistency and great content!

Thanks for the great comment and good luck to you and your team!

      Happy New Year! 🙂

  15. SEO is a living, breathing concept of maximizing the traffic that your web site generates, and because
it is, that means that it’s a constantly moving target. If you’ve ever played a game of Whack-a-Mole,
you can understand how difficult search engine optimization is to nail. In the game, a little mole pops
up out of a hole. Your job is to whack the mole on the top of the head before it disappears back down
the hole and appears in another.
