Secrets to All in One SEO for Beginner Bloggers Part 1

Beginner Blogger Tools All in One SEO ImageI bet you have it, but do you really know how to use the All in One SEO plugin?  Many don’t, even though it’s one of the handiest tools for beginner bloggers and pros to use!

So, in today’s beginner blogger question and answer post I thought I would cover some of the All in One SEO secrets with you and share with you some of the mistakes I made early on (and not so early on) in my blogging journey. 🙂

Sound good?  This will be a two part post.  The first, showing you how to configure the All in One SEO plugin for your website, and the second post showing you how to use the All in One SEO plugin on your post and pages.

I want to preface this post by pointing out the fact that you need to have done some keyword research on your blog, chosen the keywords you want to rank for.  If you haven’t, my friend Peter Fuller just created some fantastic videos on how to do keyword research for free, that you will want to check out before you get started on configuring your plugin here.

All in One SEO Plugin Setup

If you don’t already have it, install the all in one seo plugin in your blog.

After it is installed and activated on your blog, you will see a red banner at the top to take you to the admin page.  If you don’t see that, open up the settings tab in your wordpress dashboard and click on All in One SEO

All in One SEO Title, Description, and Keywords

* You will want to enable the plugin, and enter a keyword rich title, description, and keywords into the boxes provided.

All in One SEO Title:

  • This is your Home Page Title (It shows up in the very top of your screen and on the tab when someone hovers over it in their browser.)
  • Your title should be 70 characters or less.
  • It should be descriptive and contain your main keyword phrases.
  • Use the | symbol instead of the word and.
  • Eliminate any “fluff” type words where possible and stick to your keyword phrases. (the, and, of)

All in One SEO Description:

  • This is the Home Page META description that will show up in the search engines.
  • Your description should be 150 – 160 characters or less.
  • It should also contain your main keyword phrases but be readable and intriguing.
  • It should describe the content a reader will find on your blog.

All in One SEO Keywords:

  • These should be the main keywords and keyword phrases you want to rank for on your blog.
  • They should be listed in the order of the biggest priority keyword first down with the lower ones behind them.
  • Your keywords should be listed with a comma separating them.
  • Eliminate any “fluff” type words where possible and stick to your keyword phrases. (the, and, of)

All in One SEO Setting Up Canonical URLs, Other Titles, and Noindex Categories

  • All in One SEO Canonical URLs: Make sure this is box is checked.

TIP: If you don’t know what canonical URLs are, they are pretty simple.  If you access your webiste as and you can also access it as (without the www) your canonical URLs are not set properly.

It doesn’t matter which one you choose, you just need to pick one and stick with it everywhere.  That means in your blog commenting online, in your social media profiles, etc.

If you don’t know which one you should use, go to your wordpress dashboard, settings, and general tab to see how your URL’s are set.  Which ever way it is set is fine, using the canonical url setting will make it consistent.

This is important because Search Engines see both sites separately and they would think it is two sites with duplicate content.

  • Follow the image below to set the title formats for your posts, pages, categories, etc.

TIP: A mistake I made was that I had everything set to %blog_title% | %post_title% but since my blog title is about 70 characters long, my page an post titles were too long and to the search engines it looked like every post and page had the exact same title, making them possibly think that every page was duplicate content.

Beginner Blogger Setting Up All in One SEO Canonical URL Titles

  • Follow the image below for noindex pages etc.  If you don’t know what these things mean, click on the name and it will give you a description of it.  You can set these as you wish, but here are the settings I use.
    • I’ve selected that my categories, tags, and archives are noindex to avoid duplicate content issues, and I click to use categories and tags for the META keywords.
    • I also use the Auto Generate Descriptions, in case I forget to set them before publishing a post. (And with the distractions I face as a WAHM and mompreneur, I’m sure there are times I forget! lol)

Thanks so much for reading!

Tomorrow, I will show you how to use the All in One SEO Plugin on your blog posts and pages.

I’m not an SEO expert (yet), but I hope sharing with you the information I’ve received from the research I’ve done, and from the awesome blog audit I received from Ana Hoffman a few months ago will be helpful to you.  Please share your thoughts in the comments below and please tweet, share and vote  for this post, so other beginner bloggers can learn how to configure their all in one seo plugin.

  1. Hey Heather,

Excellent summary of what All in One SEO Pack is/does. Thanks for going through the settings as well. It can be overwhelming and confusing for a beginner blogger.

I know I was until I found a good video on YouTube which helped me with configuring the settings.

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to your next post, Heather.

    All the best,

      Thanks for the comment Mavis!

I did check out a YouTube video in the beginning to…and Ty Tribble covered some of this in the MLM Blog Code training as well. 🙂 Other bits and pieces I discovered after my blog audit with Ana.

      Have a great night,

  2. Heather,

Thank you for this guide on the All in One SEO! I didn’t even know that I could use it for my blog, I have been using it for individual posts only.

One question, is the All in One Title different from the blog title?

    • Heather Stephens says:

      Hi Stacy!

Glad to help with this. Yes, by all means use it on your blog too! 🙂

The All in One Title can be different than your blog title. I like to tweak my titles a little bit hoping to get another variation of my main keywords in it, but I’m always careful to keep it relevant to my topic so someone’s not confused.

Frequently my blog post title is longer than the 60 characters maximum that All in One SEO Recommends as well, which is another reason I tweak them.

The All in One SEO title is what will show up at the very top of your screen, on the tab, when someone tweets your blog, and I believe it’s what will also show up in a google search.

You still want it to be readable, not just stuffed with keywords, but appealing to someone who might find it in a search.

Thanks so much for your comment. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. 🙂

      Have a great evening!

  3. This is intense! I can see Mavis’ point about how it can be overwhelming for a beginner blogger. Thanks so much for the overview! I’m not at the point yet where I can have my own paid site or blog, so plug-ins aren’t for me just yet, but I can definitely take notes!

  4. Hello Heather… Thanks for the tips. This is indeed a very helpful guide for me for I’m going to install this on my blog now. Just on time.. thanks

  5. Heather, thank you so much! I still need to get up to speed on SEO, but this gives me a nice head start.

  6. well i’m using thesis theme on my main blog and headway and catalyst theme on other blog and have to say that i do not need any SEO plugin like All in SEO plugin because it contains lots of junk codes

  7. I definitely love the detailed explanation of the plugin, Heather – many bloggers can use this step-by-step tutorial, that’s for sure.

On the other note, since I am using Thesis Theme, I don’t need to use any additional SEO plugins, but I recently read some posts saying that there are better options out there than All-in-One-pack.

I was planning on doing some research on this in the future; will let you know when finished.

  8. Heather, this is quite timely for me too. I have read a few ‘just in time’ posts. I have the All In One… (at least I think) is it Gregs All In One? regardless… it’s similar if it’s not the same one… and I often wonder if I am using it correctly.

I wish I had more ‘wall space’ to pin excellent tutorials like this. Its wonderful to know you are using something correctly and I absolutely so appreciate your attention to detail. (even the “Queen” above me here is impressed by your thorough attention to detail! 😉

  9. Excellent tutorial Heather and thanks for the shout out.

This tutorial fits in nicely with my current project of redesigning my blog.

  10. Thanks for this introduction but the whole science of SEO lies in keyword research.

  11. This is a great post, it’s exactly what I was looking for when I first installed this plug-in.

One of the conflicting things about this plugin are the page title format. Some users suggest:

    ‘%post title% | %blog title%’

I don’t suggest doing that, in fact your method I think is the best.

Adding your blog title to your post title I think gets confusing for the search engines, especially if your blog title uses substantially different keywords than your post title.

    Any other thoughts on that?

  12. I’ve been reading about blogging for beginners.. and I think your article is a great share. thanks a lot

  13. Hey Heather,

Awesome post about all in one SEO pack, would like to know what if I open and it redirects to,is it fine or not?In the canonical urls tip you meant to say a site is opening on and it possible?I guess it will redirect to the main url that we have set in,its damn confusing rest saw two tutorials as well regarding All in one SEO pack but this one is in detail specially its for main site unlike the second one regarding posts I was aware of that but not this one mainly the settings below canonical urls. Thanks again for sharing this wonder article with all.
