5 Reasons to Use Social Media

Social Media MarketingWe all know how popular Facebook and Twitter are for personal use, but companies have quickly caught on to how effective they can be at bringing in business and creating lasting relationships with customers.   The right social media training can give you the skills and techniques to navigate the world of YouTube, LinkedIn, blogging and beyond.   For starters, consider these five important reasons to get started using social media.

5 Reasons to Use Social Media

1.  You can brand yourself as an expert

People pay attention to experts.  They listen to them, read their work, follow their blogs and look to them for the latest in professional developments and strategies.  Effective social media training can help you gain the experience and reputation people look for in an expert.  Be careful not to brand yourself too early because it’s important to be trained, confident and comfortable using social media before promoting yourself as an expert.  Once you’ve created your niche though, you will soon reap the benefits of being your business’ ‘brand expert’.

2.  Your customers are on social media

No matter what age group your target customers are in you can safely bet that they’re on social media.  Since you should market to your demographic accordingly, you can use this data from Media Badger to see how your target audience uses social media.

For example, if you’re a network marketer targeting the 25 – 45 age group you’ll know to focus your efforts between the web and mobile technologies.  Alternatively, if your target market is the 55 – 65 age group then you’ll know to focus primarily on Facebook as this group does not easily adopt to new technologies and tools.  Even if your customers are not using social media today, you can be sure they will be in the not-too-far future.

3.  You can manage your reputation

Controlling how the world sees your business becomes much more manageable with social media.  You can successfully use it to create and build relationships, communicate with your customers and inform the public of important changes and developments.  Initially, many businesses have been hesitant to jump into using Twitter or Facebook, but that trend is shifting quickly and dramatically.  Over the past few years, commercial banks whose reputations have taken a hit have been able to reach out to millions of Facebook users and Twitter followers to share their good work, such as JPMorgan Chase’s Community Giving page.

4.  Your competitors are on social media

Social media training can help you pull ahead competitively using today’s popular sites.  Today, the most competitive and successful companies understand the importance of incorporating blogging, Facebook and Twitter into their business approaches.  The sooner you catch up, the sooner the increase in your fans, followers and blog readers will drive your business forward.

5.  Tablets and smartphones make social media easy and accessible

With the push of a button or swipe of the finger, you can reach thousands quickly and rapidly.  Smartphones and tablets are taking the world by storm, allowing you to reach your customers around the clock.  Some companies are taking their tablets into the field as a sales tool, while others have developed apps to help small businesses process payments, have Internet access on the go or even keep track of receipts. The possibilities with these new tools are endless.

Branding yourself as an expert, connecting with customers, managing your reputation, pulling ahead of competitors and taking advantage of the new tablets and smartphones are but a few of the many reasons to use social media in your business, so why not get started now?

The concept of using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube as effective business tools may seem overwhelming, but with training and practice, you can learn to embrace these trends and use the most popular sites to your advantage.

  2. Joe, aloha. Solid list of reasons to jump into the social media party and join the conversation. Lots of people here with more joining each and every day.

In my opinion, Joe, businesses who are not using social media are wasting a huge opportunity to get in front of their target market and engage with them. If they want to develop loyalty, they need to use social media to connect and be there for clients/customers.

The great thing about social media, is the benefits start as soon as you do. Like chess, social media takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master.

Thx so much, Joe. Best wishes for a terrific weekend. Aloha. Janet

  3. Hi Joe,

thanks for sharing your insights. Business go where their customers are. This is one of the biggest reasons for me: Our clients are already there. For those who refuse to work with and on social media, sayonara.

Janet sums it up beautifully: It takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master.

I’d like to add: Everybody who says “Now I know it, now I’ve mastered it” is a liar.

    Take care

Solid list of reasons to use social media. Social media really is what you either make of it, or fail to make of it.

YOu can either promulgate your message or try to use it simply for marketing and likely mostly fail it .

Thank you, Joe, for sharing your insight and tips.

These days, I’m just wishing someone would come up with a really solid way to capture and consolidate all the texts, DMs and Messages in one place so staying on top of all those direct inquiries and one-on-one communications isn’t so cumbersome.

    Wishing you well-

  9. Hi Joe,

Thanks for sharing this and what stuck out for me the most was that reason Number 3 where you could manage your reputation. I think it allows a huge corporation to communicate at a more personable level with clients.

Clients like to know that they are being listened to and social media is a way for clients to express themselves and corporations to listen 🙂

  12. Social marketing can be a valuable marketing tool, but it takes patience and determination to succeed. Also, one needs to be careful, because what reaches the online environment will stay there for a long period of time.

  13. Hey Joe. I found your blog on msn. This is a very smartly written article. I will be sure to bookmark it and return to read more of your useful information. Thanks for the post. I was wondering whether it’s really necessary or not to use social media in my business. And you, Joe, came up with perfect reasons that helped me to make my mind. Great job mate!

  15. Yes, it’s a great way to find and connect with very specific demographic groups. You can also do it geographically.

I’m in Perth, Western Australia. Just by posting tweets about that city and using the hash tag I’ve made Twitter contact with many people in my city. This geo-targeting aspect has many obvious benefits, particularly for people with bricks and mortar businesses.

  16. Social media is I think the cheapest way to market. However, it takes a lot of time because you need to respond/interact with your prospects. If you outsource your social media aspect, then proper training should be given to your employee to answer the needs and issues of customers and prospects.

  17. Hi Joe (and Heather!)

Sounds breakdown of reasons to use Social Media for business. It simply doesn’t make any sense to ignore it anymore!

I especially love that you addressed the need to look at your target market’s use of mobiles to access this media, since more and more people are doing so all the time, especially within the demographics you described.

Thanks for putting this together and thanks Heather for hosting!
    All the best,
    Jym

Your post will definitely encourage a lot of business owners to be on social media (if they haven’t done so yet). I agree that it may be daunting, and that the whole process of social media marketing takes so much effort. But it is also the most rewarding strategy as we get to interact, engage and sincerely listen to our customers/target market. It is fun too! 🙂
