Video Marketing Secrets from BlogHer Part 2

Video SEO Marketing Tips BlogHerThis bookmark worthy post contains a list of resources you’re going to want to refer to again and again, including a fantastic free video marketing ebook, and one golden nugget shared by an audience member at BlogHer that had the crowd standing in applause spontaneously during the session!

We covered the basics of video marketing last week and now we get into the juicy details that really got me excited:  The things that make your audience able to find and actually want to watch your videos!

Planning, Recording and Editing Your Video:

As you’re planning your video project, you need to pay attention to several things that will make marketing your video easier.

Keyword:

  • You know the keyword phrase you want your video fund under, right?  That needs to be figured out before you get started recording your video.

Recording Your Video:

  • Keep your video short: 3-5 minutes max (shorter is better!)
  • Remember from the previous post, lighting is important, audio is more important.
  • Indymogul.com great source for lighting tutorial
  • Stay consistent with your branding on video, colors, your personality, style, and image.
  • Keep video focused, only one topic per video
  • Use a teleprompter a white board or remember a couple of bullet points to stay on task
  • Shoot your video in segments to give you an opportunity for transitions in the final edit
  • Don’t give away all your tips in your videos…leave some stuff out so they have to visit your blog.
  • Remember to include a call to action: Tell your audience what to do next and then tell them again

Editing Your Video:

  • Don’t have anything on the video that doesn’t need to be there.
  • Add music to keep the video moving: For royalty free music try:  http://incompetech.com and http://kevinmcleod.com
  • Check out youtube’s creative commons for video clips to break your video up.
  • Use annotations in youtube and let your audience interact by voting or choosing what happens next, etc.
  • Have a great thumbnail: go for the thing that people will question ”what’s she doing?” Something strange will make people want to wondering what you’re up to and click.
  • Have a title card on the beginning and end of your video with a CTA leading them to your blog.

Make your video findable: Video SEO Search Engine Optimization

Title, Description, Tags:

  • Put your tags (your keyword phrase) in the actual movie file you save and upload
  • Have a great title that’s relevant and includes keywords and name of your blog
  • Description should reflect the title
  • Tags should reflect the description and the title
  • Link to your blog in the description in the title

Video Distribution:  Get your video out there so people can find it!

  • Good: Tube Mogul Free for non commercial videos.   Commercial videos are $100/month no contract.
  • Better: Traffic Geyser $1 for a 21 day trial and $97/month no contract

Some Extra, Extraordinary Video Tips I Got From BlogHer:

  • Host an online talk show at: http://www.vokle.com/
  • Consistency in uploading videos: 1/week, 3/week doesn’t matter as long as it’s consistent.

Monetize your videos:

  • Biglive.com http://www.biglive.com/bl/ beta site that allows you to put video behind a paypal button
  • FYI: I use: Easy Video Player (to host private videos on Amazon and embed them on my blog…Great if you are creating content that someone will be paying for!)

Free YouTube eBook:

And finally: the tip that got the applause: When you’re linking to your videos make sure you’re picking the code from your channel and not the main stream so people have an opportunity to watch more of your videos and subscribe to your channel.  Here’s how to do this:

    1. Upload your video to youtube
    2. Go to your channel
    3. Click on your video
    4. Use the url on YOUR channel, not the main stream

Hi Heather,

Super creative tips here, especially the note about linking up to the channel.

Show your viewers your full body of work.

Using keywords is the best way to get targeted, passive traffic. Do some work, then let your SEO work for you during off hours…and make sure your videos wind up in front of interested parties.

Thanks for sharing your insight!

Thanks Tim,

Long videos are okay when it’s a teaching/training platform packed full of great content and it’s expected by the viwer, but there’s nothing more frustrating that listening to someone drone on because they’re not focused in what should be a quick video blog. :)

Thanks for the comment,

Videos is one of the reasons that could catch and entice people to visit and keep on coming back on your site. however, the more important there is you keep it short, all points were clearly stated and information packed.

Hi Heather,

You’re right! This definately is a bookmark worthy post! I was surprised to find that the free youtube Ebook (aka bible) didn’t require an opt in and that it is really quite comprehensive. It also has a great uploading checklist at the end.

I recently did my first youtube video and even learned how to embed it into my site. I found it got me heaps of traffic and many people found it helpful!

I will be sure to follow your tips here to improve on the video even more.

I strongly suggest that anyone who might feel uncomfortable in making a video to get out of their comfort zone and give it a go! It really is only by stepping outside of our comfort zone that we can really grow and as we grow so does our busines and naturally our incomes!

Thanks again for this great resource!

I think you have covered everything about video marketing in this post and I surely learned a lot. It is indeed important to speak as clearly as possible and the tip in the lighting is also equally substantial.

Bookmark-worthy indeed. Video marketing is not really my cup of tea, at least not yet, but info posted here is so cool. I am almost tempted to pursue it, alas, there is already so much on my plate, so to speak.

Thanks Heather for this gem of an article (both of them actually).

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the comment and the bookmarks. :)

May I get in your face about video, so that you’ll get in my face with yours on video? We all have a lot on our plate but but video is one of those things that I encourage you to do. The results you receive from video marketing compound everything else you’re doing online: branding, traffic, list building, etc. I was so afraid to get started, but it was one of the best things I’ve done for my business as of yet.

Give it a try! :)

Hi, Get a business licence and a large pile of “Model Release Forms” assuming you are going to employ actors? Other than that concentrate on getting clients rather than all the red tape

Heather Stephens September 16, 2011 at

Hey there!

I agree that I’d also rather cut through the red tape and not focus on model release forms. Simplifies business, but it’s a good reminder to those of us who don’t have a legal mind, that there are rules we need to play by.

Thanks,
Heather
