I’m eliminating blog aggregator technical aggravations today for those of you who want to install one and don’t know how!
In my previous post, I shared with you the new home based business blog aggregator I created for the prove it blog challenge participants and the benefits to creating a blog aggregator as a way to help support your team, your tribe, or connect with other blog owners in your niche!
Here’s the link if you need to get caught up: Announcing A New Home Based Business Blog Aggregator
A blog aggregator, also known as rss aggregator, or feed aggregator can become a hang-out hot-spot on your blog, like the small town corner coffee shop that everyone goes to hang out and catch up on what’s going on.
Today, I show you how to create one, step by step, headache free! And let me tell you…they can be complicated!
I promise you don’t need to know any code. The only thing somewhat technical is knowing how to install wordpress, which I believe most of my readers already know. (If you don’t and you need help, please let me know!)
Step by Step Instructions for Creating a Blog Aggregator
I created some serious buzz when I announced my new blog aggregator on my clever marketer prove it challenge facebook group this week. Everyone wanted to know how I did it!
So here is how to build a blog aggregator of your favorite blogs!
(A wordpress blog aggregator of course…)
- Install another wordpress directory in a sub-folder of your main domain using fantastico from your hosting accoung c-panel.
- Example: yourmaindomain.com/aggregator/
- Log into your new wordpress (this is a separate dashboard because it’s a separate blog.) You can log in by going to: yourmaindomain.com/aggregator/wp-admin
- Install the Aggregator Theme by Premium WordPress Themes from the wordpress dashboard of your new blog
- Go to appearance, aggregator theme options, and choose your skin.
- Go to appearance, widgets, and drag an aggregator widget into the home page feeds column
- Add the blog name, rss feed, and the number of posts you want. Select that you want it to display a list.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 for as many blogs as you want to aggregate.
- If you want to make the blog aggregator dofollow, I used the DoFollow State plugin
How to link your blog aggregator to your main blog so people can find it:
- To link the two blogs together, create a new page in each of the blogs: yourdomain.com/wp-admin and yourdomain.com/aggregator/wp-admin
- Add the redirection plugin to both blogs
- In your main blog, redirect your new page to the aggregator page. In the aggregator blog, redirect the new page to your main blog homepage.
- Also, you will probably want to install some, most, or all of your favorite plugins onto the new wordpress blog.
- You can certainly add pages and posts to your new blog as well.

A great method you have here Heather!
Questions:
1) How does it compare to just having
a separate system for staying on top of your
favorite blog RSS feeds like for example
the Google RSS Reader?
2) Does it give a real time notification
of a post published on the feeds?
Thanks, Robert
